On the 1st December 2018 we delivered our Frack Free Declaration to Downing Street, which hasd been signed by numerous politicians, academics, community groups, NGOs and members of the public. The Declaration also contained thousands of signatures collected by local residents in communities affected by fracking across the country. Together we call for an immediate halt to fracking and associated methods of unconventional oil and gas exploration and production in the UK, such as coal bed methane and acidisation. It is clear that developing an unconventional oil and gas industry in the UK will result in unacceptable negative impacts on local communities, local democracy, energy security, jobs, the climate, health and the environment, and that the government should instead be urgently developing an energy policy and infrastructure that provides the clean renewable energy future that our country – and the planet – so desperately needs.

Why we oppose Fracking in the UK?
It is clear the fracking industry cannot contribute to UK energy security in the near or medium term, and has no place as a bridge fuel in the country’s much-needed transition to a low-carbon economy. It is also evident that promoting fracking over cleaner, cheaper means of energy production is causing harm to many affected communities up and down the country, as well as draining financial resources that would be better spent on renewable energy projects. Fracking cannot help the UK achieve its legally binding climate change targets, and is more likely to result in increased emissions of greenhouse gases, particularly methane. Furthermore, the government’s latest attempts to fast-track fracking by subverting the democratic planning process has created a huge backlash, alienating residents, communities, councils and Conservative MPs alike.
Finally, we note that the fracking industry has met with government ministers 31 times during the last three years, which works out at almost one meeting every month . We therefore request the same opportunities to meet with the ministers of the relevant portfolios as have been done for the fracking industry, so that we can put forward our reasoned and fact-based case against fracking and in favour of renewable energy.
